National Geographic announced today that it is partnering for the very first time with the world’s preeminent natural historian, Sir David Attenborough, on a feature-length documentary special about the health of the world’s oceans. Presented and authored by the 98-year-old broadcaster, DAVID ATTENBOROUGH: OCEAN (working title) will share with a global audience the story of how we can, and must, restore the glory of Earth’s vast, interconnected waters.

National Geographic Documentary Films announced today, in partnership with distributors Picturehouse and Altitude, that its forthcoming film, THE MISSION, will debut in U.S. theaters on Oct. 13 and in the U.K. and Ireland on Nov. 17. The accompanying trailer and key art reflect the strange events at the heart of the global news story in the new film from EmmyⓇ Award-winning directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss (“Boys State”), and Lightbox’s Academy AwardⓇ-winning producer Simon Chinn (“Man on Wire,” “Searching for Sugar Man”), Emmy Award-winning producer Jonathan Chinn (“LA 92,” “Tina”) and Emmy Award-nominated producer Will Cohen (“Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie”).

Today, National Geographic Documentary Films announced the July 28 theatrical release of BOBI WINE: THE PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT, the award-winning feature documentary debut from directors Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp and produced by Christopher Sharp, alongside two-time Academy Award winner John Battsek’s Ventureland. In partnership with Variance Films, the documentary will open in theaters in New York and Los Angeles starting July 28 before rolling out to additional markets, followed by National Geographic Channel and Disney+ later this year.

Ahead of National Geographic’s highly anticipated upcoming new limited series A SMALL LIGHT, it was revealed today that Ariel Marx (“Candy,” “Shiva Baby,” “American Horror Story”) serves as composer and GRAMMY®-nominated Este Haim (“The White Lotus” season two, “Maid,” “Cha Cha Real Smooth”) is the executive music producer for the series. The album’s original score from Marx, A SMALL LIGHT ORIGINAL SCORE album, will be released on Hollywood Records on May 19 on all streaming platforms.

National Geographic and BBC Studios’ Documentary Unit announced the greenlight of LOST GOLD (w. t.), a three-part limited series that traces the rise and fall of maverick scientist and explorer Tommy Thompson — from his life-changing discovery of the wreck of the S.S. Central America to the turmoil that led to his prison sentence.

Today, National Geographic released the trailer from the upcoming eight-part limited series A SMALL LIGHT. The powerful series, produced by ABC Signature and Keshet Studios, will have a multinetwork launch on Monday, May 1, at 9/8c with a simulcast across National Geographic, Nat Geo WILD and Lifetime of the first two episodes. On Saturday, May 6 at 8/7c, Freeform will encore the premiere episodes. For the full series run, two episodes will debut every Monday at 9/8c on National Geographic, stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu, and will be available on the Nat Geo TV and ABC apps.

National Geographic Documentary Films announced that Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy-winning producer and director Lisa Cortés and award-winning producer and director Diego Hurtado de Mendoza will direct and produce THE SPACE RACE, a feature film that will uncover the little-known stories of the first Black pilots, engineers and scientists to become astronauts. Frank Marshall and Tony Rosenthal of The Kennedy/Marshall Company are set to executive produce, along with Carolyn Bernstein of National Geographic Documentary Films and Leland Melvin. The project will be produced by Kennedy/Marshall’s Alexandra Bowen and Aly Parker, Diamond Docs’ Mark Monroe and independent producer Keero Birla. Monroe will also serve as the film’s writer.

Today, National Geographic Documentary Films announced that Fuzzy Door’s Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins, Emmy and Peabody winner Ann Druyan and Academy Award nominee Nanette Burstein will produce the upcoming UNTITLED CARL SAGAN DOCUMENTARY, a film about the acclaimed scientist whose groundbreaking and award-winning work helped to shape our understanding of the cosmos and human existence. Burstein will also direct. The film will also be produced under the production company Hungry Man.

Today, National Geographic Documentary Films and Picturehouse announced that WILD LIFE, the latest documentary film from Academy AwardⓇ-winning directors Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo”), will open in theaters nationally this April. Following the theatrical release, the film will have its broadcast debut on National Geographic Channel on May 25 and will stream next day on Disney+. The film had a surprise screening at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival and will screen as part of the 2023 SXSW Film Festival on March 12, 2023.

The new limited series A SMALL LIGHT focuses on the inspiring, real-life story of Miep Gies, who played a critical role in hiding Anne Frank and her family during the Nazi occupation in Amsterdam. To honor Miep on what would have been her 114th birthday, National Geographic announced the powerful limited series, produced by ABC Signature and Keshet Studios, will premiere on Monday, May 1, at 9/8c on National Geographic with two back-to-back episodes. New episodes will debut every Monday at 9/8c and 10/9c on National Geographic and will stream next day on Disney+.

National Geographic Documentary Films and NEON announced today that they will bring their Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated film FIRE OF LOVE, directed by Sara Dosa, back to theaters nationwide this Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14, with a special introduction from Miranda July. The documentary feature is also produced by Dosa along with Shane Boris and Ina Fichman and edited by Erin Casper and Jocelyne Chaput.

National Geographic Content President Courteney Monroe today announced the greenlight of UNDERDOGS, an unconventional natural history series that will tell the story of the heroic underdogs of the natural world - the good, the bad and the frankly ugly. The 10-part series is co-produced by Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort and multiple Emmy®- and BAFTA Award-winning Wildstar Films (“America The Beautiful,” “Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory”).

To commemorate Hanukkah, National Geographic released a first-look photo from the upcoming limited series A SMALL LIGHT, premiering this spring on National Geographic and Disney+.
