Anthropic's new AI watermarking technology gives Certified SEO founder Damon Burton another reason to emphasize what AI cannot replace: human expertise behind the content

Anthropic's decision to add invisible watermarks to Claude-generated content gives SEO practitioners another reason to consider the role AI plays in the content they produce. For Damon Burton, founder of Certified SEO, the answer begins with a distinction he has made since generative AI became a mainstream SEO tool. Using AI to help produce content is not the same as replacing the human expertise behind it.
Burton has argued since 2023 that AI would not eliminate the need for SEO professionals, but it would change how they work. He has also warned about the mass production of content created primarily to capture rankings rather than provide something useful to readers. That point is becoming more important as AI makes it increasingly easy to produce competent yet generic content. For practitioners wanting to learn SEO, Burton's position is that AI can accelerate parts of the process. However, it should not replace the expertise required to determine what an audience actually needs.
Third-party research points to the same challenge. A SparkToro article published in April 2023 called AI-generated content "the new floor." Producing competent material had become cheap and accessible, raising the baseline for human creators. A January 2024 study by Neil Patel's team at NP Digital tracked 744 articles across 68 websites and found that human-written content generated 5.44 times more organic traffic than AI-generated content. The findings do not suggest that marketers should stop using AI. However, they do reinforce the value of human judgment in determining what gets published.
Further data coming from Search Engine Journal's August 25, 2026, article titled "Reports Indicate Google's Spam Update Focused on SEO AI Content," and Search Engine Roundtable's September 7, 2026, article titled "Google Can Lose Faith In Sites Based On Low Value Programmatic SEO," emphasize growing sentiment that AI content quantity does not equal quality.
"The watermark tells you that AI was involved," said Damon Burton, Founder of Certified SEO. "It doesn't tell you whether someone brought real expertise to the content, whether the information reflects actual experience, or whether the piece gives the reader something they couldn't get from a generic AI response. AI can help a practitioner work faster. It still takes a person who understands the subject, the audience, and the goal to make that content worth publishing." Burton brings 19 years of SEO agency experience to the Certified SEO curriculum, which teaches practitioners how to optimize websites and content for both traditional and AI-driven search while developing the skills needed to become certified SEO professionals.
Anthropic's move also comes as the broader AI industry faces growing expectations around identifying AI-generated content. Roughly 190 organizations, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI, have signed the European Union's Code of Practice for AI-generated content. However, signing the code does not mean those companies have already deployed watermarking systems. For SEO professionals, evolving technology creates another reason to understand where AI can improve efficiency and where human expertise must remain in the process.
