Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, today announced New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has begun phase one of construction to the Meyer Substation in Dansville. The Company is investing $122 million into this project, which will improve energy capacity, grid resiliency, and reliability to approximately 6,740 customers in the Village of Dansville and surrounding communities through its distribution lines. This substation also supports energy to thousands of other customers in the state through transmission lines. This investment is part of Avangrid’s $20 billion in planned investments to modernize critical grid infrastructure through 2030 to meet growing energy demands and protect communities against severe weather events.

“Our investment in upgrading Dansville’s Meyer Substation is a powerful example of Avangrid’s commitment to building a smarter, stronger, and more resilient energy future for all New Yorkers,” said Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda. “As we continue to execute our $20 billion grid modernization plan, we aren’t just upgrading electrical infrastructure, we are supporting community growth and preparing for the economic and energy demands of the future.”

The Meyer Substation is located on Frontage Road and was built in 1948. This substation supports NYSEG’s transmission lines and delivers energy to smaller substations located throughout the Company’s service territory. While the substation has been active for more than 70 years, today’s energy demands has affected the facility’s ability to provide reliable energy to customers

The work includes a full rebuild of the substation and a transformer replacement which will better accommodate the energy needs of today’s customers. Phase one of the project will help increase energy capacity and reliability with the addition of a new transformer, new breakers, plus additional support which will help prevent outages for customers. Phase one is estimated to be completed and placed in service in 2026.

Phase two of construction is expected to begin in 2027. NYSEG will add two more transformers and re-use a current transformer to help further increase capacity. The Company will also add other components that will allow for future capacity growth opportunities. NYSEG estimates completion of phase two in 2029.

“This is exactly the kind of investment communities like Dansville need,” said New York State Senator Pamela Helming. “Upgrading our electric grid isn’t just about reliability. It’s about supporting local families, small businesses, and the future growth of our communities. These improvements are long overdue. If the Governor is truly committed to meeting demand and expanding housing, we need to move more projects like this forward - and fast.”

“The Steuben County IDA is thrilled to see NYSEG’s investment in the Meyer Substation,” said Jamie Johnson, executive director of the Steuben County IDA. “This critical upgrade in grid modernization will enhance reliable electrical service for surrounding communities and deliver much-needed capacity improvements to the Wayland Industrial Park. Expanded electrical infrastructure at the Wayland site strengthens the region’s competitiveness for investment in key industrial sectors—particularly clean tech manufacturing, a targeted growth cluster for Steuben County.”

"Additional power capacity and resiliency are the primary challenges we face in rural communities with economic development,” said William Bacon, director of Livingston County Economic Development. “The investment in the Meyer Substation will address both of these concerns and provide a solid future to help build tax base and add growth to our communities."

Last year, NYSEG made nearly $880 million in capital investments. The company continues to prioritize dependable energy for customers and are investing significantly in ongoing and future capital projects that will benefit approximately 1 million customers in the state.

With energy demand expected to surge over the next decade, largely due to the construction of new data centers, Avangrid’s ability to bring new energy projects online is vital. The company has approximately 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of capacity that currently supports data centers with an additional 650 MW under construction or soon starting construction. Avangrid is actively working on new projects that will help meet expected energy demand growth in the coming years.

In March 2025, Avangrid announced its plan to invest $20 billion in U.S. electrical grid infrastructure through the end of the decade. The plan reflects the critical need to invest in energy infrastructure to meet growing demand, as well as the United States’ position as a top investment priority for Avangrid and Iberdrola.
