The Health System Market Report, Commissioned by Lirio, Found that Many Organizations Struggle to Customize Patient Outreach, Yet Few Have Invested in Solving the Problem
Lirio, the first-ever behavioral science and agentic AI platform that empowers people to live their healthiest lives, today released a report based on in-depth surveys with more than 75 executives from U.S. health systems, independent hospitals, and physician groups, showing more than half of healthcare organizations struggle to customize patient outreach content. Despite this, a vast majority of leaders at these organizations agree that AI and automation present a powerful opportunity to improve persistent engagement challenges, as well as reduce the administrative burden associated with it.
The report, "From Nudge to Next Steps: Actionable Engagement Starts With Behavioral Science & Agentic Al," commissioned by Lirio and completed by healthcare consultancy Sage Growth Partners, was developed to explore how organizations are prioritizing AI investments.
The report found that there was broad recognition among health system leaders that using AI-powered personalization technology to nudge patients to take action shows great promise in addressing their top engagement challenges, such as medication adherence, reducing no-show rates, and closing care gaps. Concurrently, more than 60 percent of leaders named automating patient outreach to ease administrative burden as their top priority; however, less than 35 percent have made investments in tools to do so. This misalignment, coupled with 83 percent of health system leaders sharing that their organization has invested in AI-based solutions for automated documentation, reveals a growing need to shift investment strategies and look beyond solutions that solely improve clinician workflows.
“AI is now a core lever for health system transformation, driving operational performance, enhancing employee engagement, and elevating the patient experience,” said Marten den Haring, CEO of Lirio. “As patients navigate increasingly complex care journeys, their expectations are rising -- not just for clinical excellence, but for empathy, safety, and equity. Investing in AI-powered personalization delivers a clear financial ROI and creates a more equitable system with improved health outcomes and greater workforce satisfaction. That’s ROI that you can’t put a price on.”
"At Covenant Health, we pledge to put patients first. Part of living out the pledge is ensuring that patients get the care they need when they need it,” said Mandy Grubb Halford, MD, Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Covenant Health (TN). “Lirio's personalization technology has proven effective in connecting our patients with needed preventative care by identifying where each patient is on their care journey and offering nudges to keep them on the right path.”
