The West End's sassiest musical is now firmly rooted in its “forever home,” the Vaudeville Theatre in London, and tells the story of Henry VIII's six wives like you've never seen - or heard - before. The musical begins with the six women arguing with one another as they each try to make out they had the worst deal from their infamous spouse. But as the girls listen to each other's stories of woe, they open up their hearts to each other as they come to realise it’s better to stick together.
Six had its premiere in 2017 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The reaction to the musical picked up the interest of West End producers, who brought the production to London, where it opened at the Arts Theatre. The impact was immediate, and from this, momentum began to build that shot the production into the musical theatre stratosphere. Since opening in the West End, Six has also impressed the critics and awarding bodies, winning a hatful of both Olivier and Tony Awards, making London theatre tickets for this show a hot property!
All the characters in Six the Musical are based on Henry VIII’s six wives. These were real people, and historical figures that may know from the popular primary school rhyme, “Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived.” By the end, you will undoubtedly know all the feisty queens for themselves, but to give you an overview of these feminist trailblazers we will introduce them one by one, starting with Henry VIII's first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Spanish-born Catherine was married to Henry VIII from 1509 to 1523, and their divorce famously led to the reformation of the church and the creation of the Church of England. Catherine's colourful character in the show takes inspiration from contemporary female role models such as Beyoncé.
Henry's second wife was Anne Boleyn. Henry divorced Catherine when he fell in love with Anne, and the pair were wed from 1533 to 1536 until, following outrageous accusations of incest and adultery, she was beheaded by the deranged monarch. Anne Boleyn's character in the musical finds her inspiration from Avril Lavigne.
In the show, Henry's third wife is inspired by pop royalty as Jane Seymour summons up her inner 'Adele.' The couple were only married for a year and Jane provided Henry with a son, Edward, but tragically died in childbirth.
Anna of Cleves was up next, and shockingly, Henry VIII’s fourth wife only lasted seven months, from January to July 1540 before Henry divorced her. Nicki Minaj and Rihanna provide the creative inspiration for the Anna of Cleves Six character.
Katherine Howard became Henry VIII’s fifth wife just days after, and the pair were wed for 18 months until February 1542 when she was beheaded due to her constant adultery. Brittany Spears and Ariana Grande both inspired the Katherine Howard Six character.
The sassy sextet is completed by Catherine Parr: Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife who survived him. The couple wed on 12 July 1543 and remained together until Henry's death on 28 January, 1547. The Catherine Parr Six character is inspired by Alecia Keys.
Six the Musical has now become a worldwide sensation. It has been performed in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and Japan, with no sign of its popularity waning anytime soon. The production is one hour and 40 minutes of pure theatrical joy, and tickets to Six the Musical are set to remain smoking-hot property for a long time to come. Have YOU seen it yet?
